On October 18, 2007 PR Legacy hosted the first screening of the documentary film “Pearl or Peril on the Sunshine Coast”. PR Legacy is a citizens group formed in response to Catalyst Paper’s permit application to expand their industrial waste landfill within the Powell River municipal boundaries and within less than 100 metres of homes. The proposed 9 story vertical landfill is unprecedented. Catalyst wants to deposit over one million tonnes of waste on top of the historically contaminated landfill that was capped in 1995 following a pollution abatement order from the Ministry of the Environment. (MoE) The MoE’s permit application process has reduced public input. PR Legacy is a focal point for the groundswell of outrage and opposition that has included a rally, a petition with over 3000 signatures, over 120 letters written during the consultation process, the development of a website (www.prlegacy.org), meetings with public officials, an auditor general’s petition and the production of this film. Our goal is to prevent the placement of industrial waste in our residential neighbourhood. PR Legacy requests that public leaders and media representatives act to raise awareness of this issue with the goal that the permit application be denied.
