Community initiative to halt expansion of the local Catalyst industrial waste dump.

Landfill Information

Independent Consultant's report

The Ministry of Environment has released its 146 page Independent Consultant's report. It is available through Catalyst's web site here:

It deals only with the water issues, calling for more testing protocols, and acknowledges:

Industrial Waste Dump Facts

The local paper mill in Powell River BC, operated by Catalyst, is seeking to reopen the sealed off industrial waste dump directly adjacent to the long-established community of Wildwood. Following are details of the proposed expansion:

Critique of Golder's "Environmental Assessment"

Editor's note:
This is a work in progress, so interested parties should check back in occasionally, as more material is added and referenced. (Please refer to the recent letter from The Council of Canadians for another indepth critique.)

The original document may be downloaded from the Catalyst website here. The PDF document is difficult to view do to its size and format. It is also difficult to quote from by virtue of its "locked" text properties.  For that reason, we’ve decided to begin copying it to an easier to read HTML format here.  The references below will source the HTML version for simplicity.

Many thanks to Nelle Maxey and Dave Harris.

Leachate Leakage

In fact there are at least two pieces of evidence which show that there is in fact a massive amount of leakage.

1. By calculating the amount of water going into the mini-landfill via rainfall statistics, and checking that against the amount that is captured, if there were no leak, the two measurements would be the same. But when the volume of water calculated from the amount of rain falling on the area is compared to the amount that is retrieved, there is a massive discrepancy. About 1/3 of the rainwater is not being captured. Catalyst measures the amount being pumped out, but does not release that information to Ministry of Environment.
